Since 1998, WPAT has created value for its clients through the quality of its service. A boutique intellectual property firm specializing in patents, trademarks and copyright, we provide legal advisory and transactional support to clients in technology and business. Strategically located among the technology corridors on both coasts of the continental United States, we represent clients in every facet of their intellectual property needs — patent and trademark prosecution, validity and infringement actions, appeals and oppositions, trade secret matters, technology licensing and transfer, and the international protection of intellectual property.

Patent Prosecution

Whether nurturing a new invention within a research and development plan or managing an established portfolio as part of a long-term business strategy, we make it our business to understand your needs and deliver the most creative, cost-effective solution. Many of our attorneys formerly served as examiners at the U.S. Patent Office — so we know when to oppose, when to negotiate, and when to step back and try a different approach.

Trademarks

We represent clients in every facet of their trademark needs — including trademark prosecution and infringement and dilution actions — and work closely with our foreign affiliates to secure protection abroad. Where advisable, we curtail prolonged prosecution through in-person conferences with Trademark Office officials via our Northern Virginia office.

Patent Litigation

WPAT advises businesses and individuals facing infringing goods and unfair business practices. We are advocates, counselors, strategists and negotiators — recommending cost-effective strategy alongside aggressive litigation. When our clients' patent rights are challenged, we respond with skill and experience, applying the right solution to the situation at hand.

Copyright

We design and implement copyright procurement strategy, recommend domestic and international protection and enforcement, and identify planning opportunities across our clients' core and non-core innovations. Beyond registration, we help clients prevent the importation of infringing goods in cooperation with U.S. Customs.

Virginia Office
A former U.S. Patent Examiner and registered patent attorney, Justin is a member of the Maryland Bar and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He examined patents in USPTO Technology Group 2100 — computer software, hardware and information security — for nearly five years, after eight years as a senior engineer building communication systems for AT&T, MCI, the U.S. Navy and NATO. His practice focuses on USPTO prosecution, litigation counseling and infringement opinions, with particular strength in patent validity and claim-scope analysis.

Tony S. King, Esq.
Founding Partner
Southern California Office
A former U.S. Patent Examiner from Group 3700, the Medical Device Division of the USPTO, and a registered patent attorney, Tony handles patent prosecution, infringement opinion work, trademark and copyright. He counsels inventors and corporations on patenting strategy, patentability and infringement analysis, freedom-to-operate opinions and portfolio building — across biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, semiconductors, electronics and software. He also serves as U.S. prosecution counsel for foreign IP law firms. A fluent Mandarin speaker, he has lectured on intellectual property at National Chung Hsing University and National Taiwan Normal University.
